CES FIRESIDE FOR YOUNG ADULTS (CONFERENCIA PARA JOVENS ADULTOS - 06/03/2011)

The Marriott Center was filled Sunday (06/03/2011) night as Elder L. Tom Perry spoke to the youth of the Church about helping others return to their Christian faith, in a worldwide CES Fireside.

Elder Perry was joined by Elder Russell M. Nelson. He started the fireside by speaking of differences in the generations, especially with technology.

“Think of what it is for an 88-year-old man to keep up with you,” Elder Perry said.

He said his generation has the advantage, however, because they have been through the changes. Elder Perry said he looked forward to the same things the youth look forward to now: romance, careers and marriage. Instead, though, his generation enlisted to fight in WWII.

“I am one of the remaining survivors of the greatest generations,” he said.

He then shared an experience of being in Nagasaki after the destruction of the atomic bomb.

“The situation was very bleak and a few of us wanted to do more,” Elder Perry said.

The decision was made to help rebuild Christian churches, and despite the language barrier, the soldiers worked hard to restore the buildings of worship for the Japanese people. Months later, as the soldiers departed from Japan, the members of those churches sent them off with the song “Onward Christian Soldiers,” along with their love and gifts.

Elder Perry said it is now the youth’s turn to help the weakening foundation of the Christian faith throughout the world.

“I pray that in a future day you’ll be known as the greatest generation,” he said.

Elder Perry also spoke about sacrifice and how it has been part of the gospel since Adam’s time.

He said sacrifices were instituted to symbolize the great sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the Atonement.

“The greatest message we carry to the world is that the gospel of our Savior has been restored to the Earth,” Elder Perry said.

Four points were given to help us strengthen our own faith, something we need to do before we can help others: having daily prayer, daily scripture study, temple worthiness and giving service.

Elder Perry left the youth with a challenge to help others come to know of the gospel and become the greatest generation.

Élder Perry estava acompanhado do Élder Russell M. Nelson.
